Parables

-My Fitness My Ministry

Jesus spoke in parables to many people. When asked by his disciples why he spoke in parables he told them "The knowledge of the kingdom has been given to you, but not to them." Matthew 13:11 NIV. Every believer is a disciple of Christ and as his disciples we are each given the ability to understand the parables of life.

Jesus said "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing they do not hear or understand." Matthew 13:13 NIV. Parables need to be broken down in order for people to understand them. Then once they are understood, they can be practiced and once they are practiced and repeatedly practiced they begin to take root in the life of that individual.

The parable I have been given to understand is that of fitness, health or physical wellness. So lets break down how proper fitness and nutrition are parables: Everyday in one way or another we are shown or told about the latest healthy food or the best way to lose weight, however our nation is overcome with obesity. Why? Because just like Matthew 13:13 states we are seeing and hearing but not understanding HOW to make exercise and proper nutrition a part of our daily lives. We know we should do these things but it is never truly understood how to go about them. Therefore, it is never practiced and never takes root. So, just as in the parable, you know it, don't understand it, never practice it and ultimately it never takes root in your life. So, if you are not losing weight or prospering the way you feel you should be, look closely at how you are understanding and following instruction.

In Matthew 13:15 Jesus said "For the people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them."

Callous - being hardened and thickened
Atherosclerosis - a process of progressive thickening and hardening of the walls of medium- sized and large arteries as a result of fat deposits on their inner lining.

Matters of the heart. When our arteries become thick and hardened it is difficult and in some instances, fatally impossible, for blood to flow to major organs such as...the heart.

In Proverbs 4:23 we are taught that we are to guard our hearts! How might we guard them? Jesus says at the end of Matthew 13:15 that if people would turn to him he would heal them.

In the physical wellness parable, Jesus is the healing exercise and proper nutrition. If you open your eyes and ears to understand your own physical wellness, you will practice it and practice it some more until it takes root in your life.

God has blessed me to understand physical wellness (Matthew 13:16), while many people in our current society are trying to figure out this weight loss thing (Matthew 13:17).

Lastly, James 1:22 says "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Upon reading the entire paragraph you find that if you ingest and live out instruction, biblical as well as physical, your efforts will be blessed!

I encourage you to become understanding doers of your own physical wellness!

His Dwelling Place

Exodus 36:8-38 speaks of the intricate detail that went into building the tabernacle that God would dwell in amongst His chosen people. Along with that detail came the finest materials in order to build this tabernacle. Once it and all of its contents were completed God took up residence in the tabernacle in the midst of His people. In John 10:10 Jesus states that "The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full". Then in John 14:6 Jesus tells us that "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". If the body God has given us is plagued with illness, disease and physical restrictions we are unable to take full advantage of this statement. But by accepting Jesus, we are saying yes to God to have an indwelling with in us, our body, our temple. Because Jesus paid the way for us to have a deep, connected relationship with The Father, we now are the perfect vessel for God to come and dwell in. The richness of the bible also gives us 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. Here we are told that we (our bodies) are Gods temple. Since God was so meticulous in the instruction of the making of the tabernacle do you not think He took even greater joy and precision in making you!!! Only the finest material went into making this body that we call home. Romans 12:1 asks us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God as a reasonable act of worship. Why? Again, we go to the scriptures and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reiterates that our body is our temple and that we should honor God with our body. God took great care in forming us, we could at least honor Him by caring for the one body He has passionately created. After all, our individual bodies make up the body of Christ. The Case For Physical Activity

My Fitness My Ministry

Women tend to out live men by about eight years. But with this longer life is a trend of more dependence on someone else to complete activities of daily living. These simple tasks include but are not limited to standing from a couch, bed or chair, walking up or down stairs, dressing one's self and even personal hygiene. As we age, muscles tend to adapt more slowly to stress, but I encourage you to be physically active on most, if not all, days of the week. The dependence on others can be thoroughly reduced by participation in moderate to vigorous physical activity at least once a week.

Walking tends to be the preferred mode of physical activity by most Americans. However, studies show that walking only prevents the decline of your current muscle health but does not contribute to the building of new muscle tissue which is vital in the maintenance of independence as we age.

Osteoporosis affects one in four women over the age of 50. Weight bearing and strength training exercises help to build muscle tissue in the legs, hips and spine where this disease takes its toll on the people who have it. Osteoporosis in some premenopausal women, may be stopped or prevented by a healthy diet, not smoking, and physical activity.

An effective preventative strategy is to partake in regular physical activity. You only get one body in life, take care of it!

Bible verses to support exercise:
Romans 12:1
1 Corinthians 3:16 - 17
1 Corinthians 6:19 - 20
John 10:10

A Jog Anyone?

My Fitness My Ministry

The hearts response to any activity above resting is to increase its rate. This increase in heart rate is accompanied by an increase in blood volume which allows more blood to flow to the rest of the body, especially active muscles, each time the heart pumps. By increasing in rate and volume the dexterity of the heart permits many levels of physical activity.

So, what does this mean for you? Cardiovascular work of any kind is a very effective way to decrease your body fat and increase your self image. My suggestion to my clients is to participate in cardiovascular activities outside of our personal training sessions. These activities include running, biking, jogging, group fitness classes etc.

Picking up a jog/run is at each individuals own pace. One person may feel a jog is 5.0 mph while another a jog is 3.0 mph. You must assess your own level of cardiovascular fitness when deciding what your jog pace will be. If you choose a pace that is too fast your heart will let you know by your rate of breathing. If your heart cannot keep up with your activity you will feel winded and the need to stop. Please don't be discouraged by this, just reset your pace to something more comfortable for yourself. You should be able to sing or have a conversation with someone while jogging.

Lastly, you want to run/jog in comfortable weather. Extremes at both ends should be avoided. If it is cold you want to run in layers so that you may remove pieces as your body warms up. When it is hot you may want to run early when it is cooler, but if you must please dress in light, breathable clothing and drink plenty of water before going out.

When beginning any new physical activity please speak with your doctor before you start.

Distorted Image of Love

-My Fitness My Ministry

"Love Hurts". How many times have we heard this phrase? And we heard it from a young age so we grow up believing that love is supposed to hurt.

If God is love, 1 John 4:8. And we were made in the image of God, Genesis 1:27. And He planned for us to prosper from the beginning, Jeremiah 29:11. Can someone explain to me where hurt comes in?

1 Corinthians 13:8-13 says "Love never fails". Rephrased...God never fails! We are the image of God the father and if He never fails that means WE never fail. Are there going to be stumbling blocks on our paths? Definitely! If we went through life unscathed, what would we learn and how would we grow to fully trust in God?

We have to let God live in our hearts and learn to love ourselves enough to take care of the life He has given us to live.

God is Love. Love God, Love People.

Live Accordingly

Titus 2:6-8
Followers of Christ must live by faith and live in love. This way others, not of the faith, will see your actions and be drawn to the goodness of God. If your christian life reflects something other than the love of Christ it is a contradiction to the person you say you are and the God you say you serve.

Jesus - the Spirit of God reincarnated in human form.
Christ - The anointed one. His purpose was clear from the beginning; to shed His blood in death and be raised again for the salvation of all men. John 3:16

Tausha - Child of God chosen from the beginning. Ephesians 1:4-5
Personal Trainer - it is my purpose, job and joy to inspire others to get into the best possible shape physically, sometimes even mentally and spiritually. If I cannot find the time or desire to stay in shape in these three dimensions, how then can I speak to others about their all around well being? Live your life as an example according to your purpose. Prayer will lead you there.
